On what inspired her to start the District 9 Student Fellowship Program: It came from, as a young person, sometimes feeling like I had so much more to give than adults were willing to let me handle or be responsible for. So now, having the power to let students run as fast and as far as they want to, with the support of teaching them skills and being able to answer their questions, has probably been one of the best parts of being in this role. I was only elected thanks to the work of over 100 students and teachers who got involved and did that campaign fellowship. So, going into my office, it was a no-brainer. I didn't get there just to say "I made it' and 'I'm a school board member." I got there to open doors and to teach people about how the system works and how we can all be a part of it.
“No matter how tiny, no matter how insignificant it may feel, go take action, and you’re going to open a ripple effect of bigger and bigger actions with bigger and bigger impact.”
Mentors & the importance of their guidance: I have had moments where I've been able to take sort of courageous steps to support students when they try things that are bold and different, and every single time, I just close my eyes and think, "Dr. Padrón did it for me. I'm ready to do it for so many others."
“If I can leave this role knowing that every student, no matter their background, has a higher chance of success because of the work I did, that will be successful”
